The band

Descarga Latina is one of Hamburg’s most consistent Latin jazz outfits. Seven musicians coming from jazz and son, with a horn section up front (alto sax, trumpet, trombone) and a full rhythm section (piano, bass, congas, drums) that moves from open descarga to tight mambo without switching personnel.

What they play

Material from the Cuban-New York catalogue that made Latin jazz what it is: Poncho Sánchez carrying the descarga into California rooms in the eighties, Tito Puente turning the mambo into a genre of its own, Dizzy Gillespie opening bebop to the African clave. Their own arrangements, never note-for-note covers.

Where they’ve played

Cotton Club, Birdland, and other Hamburg jazz rooms. Flexible format: from intimate quartet to the full seven-piece with brass.
