Birdland

The room

Birdland is the Hamburg namesake of a mythical room in jazz history. In the Eimsbüttel neighbourhood, it has programmed modern jazz since 1985, with a focus on bebop, hard bop and post-bop Latin jazz.

The sound

Small capacity, stage at the level of the audience, low light. Here you hear the phrasing and you hear the silence between notes. Not a place for background music.

Because a post-bop Latin jazz set, Cuban descarga, and the New York catalogue of Tito Puente or Ray Barretto ask for exactly this kind of room: small, close, with a crowd that understands the clave.
